A Day in the Life of a Newborn Photographer
Being a newborn photographer is more than just capturing sweet, sleepy moments—it’s about patience, preparation, and creating a stress-free experience for new parents. Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes for a glimpse into a typical day in my life as a newborn photographer.
Morning: Preparing for the Session
I love slow mornings with coffee in hand, but on shoot days, my day starts early with preparation. If I’m shooting in my client’s home, I double-check my equipment:
Camera
Lenses (typically a 50mm or 35mm for lifestyle newborn sessions)
Extra batteries and memory cards
Soft wraps and neutral outfits (if needed)
White noise machine to keep baby calm
If it’s a studio session, I arrive early to adjust lighting, set up cozy blankets, and make sure everything is spotless. A calm, warm environment is key to keeping newborns comfortable.
Mid-Morning: The Photoshoot
Most newborn sessions start around mid-morning, when babies tend to be the sleepiest. Upon arrival at my client’s home, I take a few minutes to chat with the parents and reassure them that they don’t need to stress—babies run the show, and we’ll take breaks as needed!
I guide them through gentle, natural posing, capturing a mix of:
Baby alone, wrapped up or in their crib
Candid moments with parents snuggling their little one
Sibling interactions (if applicable)
Tiny details—baby toes, and soft little fingers
Each session is different, but I always prioritize a relaxed atmosphere, allowing the baby to lead while I work with the natural light and surroundings.
Afternoon: Post-Session & Editing
Once I wrap up the shoot, I head back home (or to my favorite coffee shop!) to back up the images. Losing photos is not an option, so I always store them on multiple hard drives.
Then comes the creative part—editing! I go through each image, selecting the best ones and carefully enhancing them while keeping the colors soft and natural. This process takes a few hours, but seeing the final gallery come together is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
Evening: Business & Family Time
After a full workday, I shift gears. If I have client emails, inquiries, or social media posts to schedule, I’ll take some time to tackle those. Running a photography business means wearing many hats—photographer, editor, marketer, and client coordinator!
Then, it’s time to unplug and enjoy the evening with my family. Whether it’s a cozy dinner, a walk outside, or simply unwinding with a book, I love balancing my passion for photography with quality time at home.
Why I Love What I Do
Newborn photography is more than just a job—it’s a privilege. Capturing a family’s earliest memories with their baby, freezing those tiny details before they change, and giving parents a keepsake they’ll cherish forever is why I do what I do.
Every session is unique, and no two days are the same. But the joy of creating meaningful, heartfelt images never fades.
Are you expecting a little one soon? Let’s connect and create memories you’ll treasure forever!
Let's turn fleeting moments into timeless keepsakes! xoxo Edyta
